Jim will discuss the evolving nature of agency/client relationships, the increasingly important role of technology and the need for expertise in social, mobile and data. He will also share his insights on mapping the customer experience and tying it to a bought owned earned strategy.
If anyone understands how agencies rise and fall, Jim Magill does. Jim started his advertising career at Ogilvy & Mather, San Francisco and Hal Riney on clients as diverse as California First Bank, Henry Weinhard’s Beer, the Oakland A’s and Swanson Foods. He opened Riney’s Chicago office and managed the Anheuser-Busch account, and spent two years at Y&R Chicago building a global marketing program for Bond Brewing.
Jim opened his own agency in 1994 and went on to manage the Union Bank, SF Visitor’s & Convention Bureau, Jackson Casino and Oakland Raiders, among other accounts. In late 2005, Jim joined Sapient Corporation to help launch their Sapient Interactive practice, which integrates business consulting, technology and marketing into client success models. Jim along with two partners founded CIBO in late 2010 as a next-generation marketing agency that would focus on client results and leverage all their experience to create a different model. In 2011 the agency passed $5 million in revenue, with clients like Seagate Technology, Dolby, Disney, Union Bank and Volcom.
Jim will share many examples from his 30+ year advertising career during which he helped build some of advertising’s most venerated brands at some of its most respected agencies.

How does fostering a diverse workplace environment improve the work? What does “diversity” at work mean? Join Heberto Gutiérrez, founder of INVENTIVA, a multicultural consulting and marketing firm, as he explores the value of diversity in the workplace.
Through case studies and examples, you will learn how “diversity” in the workplace can lead to more creativity and agency growth. A case study will be presented that will help you understand cultural differences among the “new” majority in the U.S.
Heberto was born in Mexico but received his formal education in the U.S. He founded INVENTIVA (“ingenious” in Spanish) in 1990 after a career that included stints as General Manager for the Univision TV station in Texas, V.P. for a Coca-Cola division and an Industrial Relations Manager for Kroger Foods. He founded his multicultural marketing, consulting and training firm expressly to help companies succeed by embracing diversity in the workplace.
His nationally recognized firm, based in San Antonio, Texas has worked with industry-leading companies including AT&T, American Electric Power, Prudential Insurance, PacifiCare, R.J. Reynolds, Motorola, Household Finance, Six Flags Theme Parks, Arby’s Restaurants, Delta Faucets, International Paint, Justin Boots and the American Quarter Horse Assn. His consulting and training has extended beyond the U.S. borders including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Chile.
Heberto’s effectiveness in the marketing industry has been recognized with a variety of national awards including ADDYs, Effies, Tellies, and Omnies. Reno and Sparks live off their special events. As casino revenues and taxable room nights have tumbled in recent years, our city’s largest event supporters have tightened their budgets. a2n2 has assembled a panel from some of Reno’s largest and most important special events to discuss the topic of “Marketing Reno/Sparks Special Events: Tackling New Challenges in a Tough Economy” on Tuesday, October 12, at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa.
Officials from Hot August Nights, Nugget Rib Cook Off, Reno Air Races and Reno-Tahoe Open will take the stage October 12 to discuss their concerns and strategies for marketing their special events.
Panel participants:
The discussion will be moderated by Bob Felten, UNR Reynolds School of Journalism Professor and former Reno advertising executive.
With less local corporate and municipal sponsorship money available to support popular special events, promoters will have to get very resourceful in the coming years. How do we ensure the future success of Reno’s most popular tourist draws? Roderick Fenske, an award winning filmmaker and creative genius, will be the keynote speaker at the Advertising Association of Northern Nevada’s September Power Lunch. Fenske will present on the importance of taking risks in the creative field, followed by a screening of his award-winning short film Careful Carl.
This presentation will take place Tuesday, September 14th, 2010, at a2n2’s new Power Lunch venue, the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa. Networking begins at 11:30, lunch is served at 12.
Fenske’s style can best be described as performance-based humour mixed with the surreal and absurd. Fenske is a man who has traveled many paths. After growing up in Reno and holding several jobs, Fenske fell into the business of advertising. Fenske took a job in the mailroom of agency giant McCann-Erickson, San Francisco and worked his way up to a copywriting position. After stints at Ketchum and Saatchi & Saatchi, Roderick moved to New York to work at Ogilvy & Mather and JWT. In 2000, Fenske moved to London where he started directing music videos and commercials while working as a creative director at agencies such as HHCL, St. Luke’s and TBWA.
After achieving notoriety with his special brand of humor (and several awards) with commercials for Sony Playstation 2, FCUK and Channel 5 — that Fenske both wrote and directed — he was invited to join the Swedish film collective Acne. Three years later, having directed internationally for the likes of Honda, Alfa-Romeo, Sprint and Coca-Cola, Fenske joined Hungry Man. He has been with Hungry Man since 2007 and has won several international awards including a Eurobest Gold, The British D&AD, and recently a Bronze Lion in the Cannes International Festival 2010. Fenske has also created two short films that have been getting some notoriety on the independent film circuit. Careful Carl, which has been recognized at both the Palm Springs International Film Festival and BAFTA, will be screened at the Power Lunch. His most recent short film is Future Dave and it is currently doing well on the festival circuit.
